Pet Sounds (1966) — The Beach Boys
Posted 9/4/25What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said? It is a true masterpiece, one that is still shaping the sound of pop music today.
Pet Sounds is the musical equivalent of writing diary entries while little cartoon blue birds flutter around your head. It's light and whimsical, but with profound meaning and stories within. It sometimes feels like easy listening and carries a comforting simplicity. That simplicity, however, does not equate to plainness. There's a groundbreaking level of self-awareness and intelect in each song, which is even more impressive when you consider when this album was made.
I have spent so many days with this album playing in the background. It's sweet and tender and, at times, crushing. Musically, lyrically, and conceptually, Pet Sounds is a revolutionary album and one of my favorites of all time.
