Magnolia: Music from the Motion Picture (1999) — Aimee Mann

Newest comfort album coming in HOT!

I recently watched Magnolia and have since been listening to its soundtrack a whole lot. It is a perfect soundtrack for the movie, matching its essence with its dejected, pessimistic tone uplifted by a somewhat whimsical energy carried without.

Aimee Mann is such a powerful songstress, somehow weaving life's most melancholic feelings into a crystal clear tapestry. Her musical prowess is in full display here, and I think it's my favorite work of hers that I've heard so far.

Just listening to it while I write this evokes an emotional response in me. This soundtrack, which also does exist as a full original album, explores people's aversion to being loved and sinks itself into the cracks of self-inflected rejection. It's dark, deep, and human.

I will say that, although I love Supertramp, this soundtrack ends at song #9 for me. The non-Aimee songs break the rhythm for me and distract from her triumph here.
