Aja (1977) — Steely Dan
Posted 10/4/25This is a solid album, even if it is a bit corny when listened to today. The lyrics are kinda lackluster, but the production is unbelievable. It manages to make even the lowest points of this album shine with its sharpness and refinement.
This is the perfect fusion of jazz and rock. I think there are a couple songs I would've preferred to be instrumentals because Donald Fagen's voice grates on me a bit at times. Even then, the music carries the whole thing and is really something special.
This isn't my favorite Steely Dan album, but it is probably their objective best. There was some serious musical innovation happening here, and the titular song is a FEAT! It may be a bit less enjoyable these days, but I totally understand why this album is treasured by so many people.
